STRUCTURE OF THE ENGINEERING SERVICES DEPARTMENT (WORKS & HOUSING)
The Engineering Services Department (ESD) covers both Works and Housing Sectors. Under the Works Sector, we have three (3) Units and four (4) Divisions in the Housing Sector namely:
Works Sector:
* Electrical and Street Lighting Services Unit
* Engineering Management Services Unit
* Central Workshop and Equipment Unit
Housing Sector:
* Electrical Engineering Division
* Mechanical Engineering Division
* Structural Engineering Division
* Civil Engineering Division
FUNCTIONS OF ENGINEERING SERVICES DEPARTMENT
The statutory duties of the department include, among others, the following;
⦁ Formulation of Engineering Policies as they relate to Engineering Infrastructure (Electrical, Mechanical, Structural & Civil works, Highway furniture and General Engineering works) Nationwide.
⦁ Provision of Infrastructural Facilities (Roads, Culverts, Drains, Water supply, Electricity and Sewage treatment plants for Federal Government Estates and Site and Services Schemes.
⦁ Planning, Designing and Development of Engineering Facilities (internal and external) in Housing Development and other Government Projects.
⦁ Provision of Engineering Consultancy Services to MDAs. Preparation of Contract Documents for the Procurement of Engineering Facilities.
⦁ Supervision of Engineering Construction and Installation Works.
⦁ Operations, Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Engineering Facilities.
⦁ Guiding Government in the selection and appointment of Engineering Consultants.
⦁ Vetting and approval of submissions from Engineering Consultants on Government Projects and Private Sector Operators to ensure conformity to National Standards and Specifications.
⦁ Monitoring and Evaluation of Government Projects.
⦁ Investigation and appraisal of failed or damaged Engineering Facilities/Structures both within and outside the Country for Federal the Government.
⦁ In-house Training of Engineering Personnel.
⦁ Keep and maintain a reliable database of street lighting installations on Federal Roads and Bridges Nationwide.
⦁ Develop and maintain Electrical and lighting code of practice, specification and standards for the design, installation, rehabilitation and maintenance.
⦁ Conducting quality control tests on Engineering Materials,
⦁ Certification of Engineering Works.
⦁ Guiding Government in identifying priority areas with respect to Engineering Projects through budgetary proposals.
⦁ Assisting Board of Surveys in MDAs with the Assessment / evaluation of Plants, Machinery and Equipment.
⦁ Conducting geotechnical and geophysical surveys on engineering works as related to Government Projects.
⦁ Assessment/Evaluation of Government vehicles, plants equipment and other Engineering items.
⦁ Development and Management of Electrical / Mechanical Engineering training Schools located at Lagos, Abeokuta and Kuje in FCT.
⦁ Develop and Implement HSE policy in liaison with other relevant Department, which would then drive the implementation of such key issues as business continuity and disaster recovery plan for FMWH.
⦁ Development of Safety & Security Management System for the Ministry.
⦁ Development and Management of Electrical/Mechanical Engineering Training Schools located in Lagos, Abeokuta and Kuje in FCT
⦁ Initiate and Implement Emergency Procedure and safety drills for the entire Ministry.
⦁ Production of streetlight poles, operation and maintenance of plant and equipment employed in street lighting services.
⦁ Provision of Street Lighting and Electrical Equipment within Federal Government Estates, Public Buildings and Institutions.
⦁ Operation and Maintenance of Ministry’s generators.
⦁ Procurement, Installation and Rehabilitation of Elevators/Lifts installed in Federal Secretariats and MDAs.
⦁ Fabrication of Mechanical tools, products, poles etc.
⦁ Production of Foundry items.
⦁ Design, Construction and Rehabilitation of Street Lights on Federal Roads and Bridges Nationwide.
⦁ Relocation and Re-alignment of Power Transmission and Distribution Lines, and Transformer Sub-Stations on Federal Roads and Bridges.
